If the information that teachers’ salaries are to increase by 2.5% next year is confirmed, it will be a deeply unfair proposal — assessed the president of ZNP, Sławomir Broniarz. He added that if this happens, he will request an urgent meeting with the Minister of Education, Barbara Nowacka.

On Monday, at a press conference, the president of ZNP referred to media reports stating that the „Draft of long-term macroeconomic assumptions for 2026–2030,” adopted by the government at the end of April, indicates a 2.5% increase in salaries in the budget sector in 2027, which corresponds to the estimated inflation rate.

„It will be an unfair proposal”
Broniarz announced that on June 15, during a meeting of the Social Dialogue Council, the government is to present a report on budget execution and a proposal for salary increases for the state budget sector, including teachers.
— We will listen with interest, and we hope that the information that has appeared in public space, that the salary increase for teachers will be at the level of 2.5 percentage points, will not be confirmed — he said.

— If it is indeed true that a teacher’s salary is to increase by these 2.5 points, it will be a deeply unfair and harmful proposal, both for the education system and, perhaps primarily, for teachers — he assessed. According to him, it will be a proposal „completely inconsistent with the declarations made by the ruling party when the joint declaration on the work on the Civic Initiative of the Polish Teachers’ Union was signed.”
Broniarz stated that a 2.5 percentage point increase in the base salaries of teachers means an increase of PLN 130 to PLN 160 gross.

— I repeat, it is deeply unfair and, at the same time, does not reflect the real professional and intellectual effort, the workload, and the scope of duties that teachers undertake — he said. He added that a study conducted as part of a project carried out by the University of Warsaw commissioned by ZNP shows that salary level is the primary reason why teachers decide to leave the profession.
He reminded that from the new school year, teachers face new challenges, with a new core curriculum being introduced in primary schools.
„Our appeals are not yielding results”
The vice-president of ZNP, Urszula Woźniak, recalled that a citizens’ bill amending the Teachers’ Charter Act, which links teachers’ salaries to the average wage in the economy, is not being procedurally processed in the Sejm. The first reading of the ZNP-authored bill was held again in January 2024. Woźniak reminded that at that time, all parliamentary clubs voted in favor of further work on the bill, after which it was sent to a parliamentary committee and then a subcommittee, where it was „frozen.”
She stated that the average wage in the economy in 2024 was PLN 8,161, and this year it is PLN 9,562, meaning it increased by PLN 1,400 since 2024. During the same period, the base salary of a certified teacher increased from PLN 5,915 gross to PLN 6,397 gross, an increase of PLN 482. She emphasized that teachers’ disappointment and bitterness are immense.

— Our appeals, our words, our letters, our actions, including our pickets, our signature collection, are not yielding results — she said.
— Education is losing to the economy, it’s losing to the war, it’s losing to political arrangements. Its social, civilizational, and cultural role is being neglected. Its enormous influence on shaping and addressing future challenges is being overlooked. It is not perceived as an area of social and cultural education, showing civilizational and climatic threats, social transformations, and defense, for example, against right-wing radicalism and populism — assessed Broniarz.
